The human resources executive from Raphoe, is a dedicated volunteer with Saint Vincent DePaul. A dedicated sports fan she is a big supporter of GAA and enjoys keeping fit by jogging and partaking in weekly fitness classes. She has an avid interest in traditional music, soulful Motown and Sixties music, and enjoys drama, dancing and singing.

Catherine hopes to explore South America, build on her Spanish and volunteer in an orphanage in  Argentina. She hopes to work her way towards becoming an HR Director in a successful multinational company in Ireland. She aspires to learn to play the piano, to get involved with more charities alongside SVP and to represent Donegal in the Rose of Tralee 2013.

“To become a Rose and represent my county at the festival would be a dream come true” says Catherine.

Club Naomh Naille to Host Cardiac Screening Day

How healthy is you heart? Why not find out at Club Naomh Naille’s Cardiac Screening Day, to take place Saturday 6^th of April, from 10.00am, in the Clubhouse Mountcharles, ahead of World Heath Day.

The Doctor led service, will be provided by Mobile Cardiac Screening Company Healthy Hearts Healthy Lives (HHHL). Set up in 2011 by former Armagh footballers John and Tony McEntee, Healthy Hearts Healthy Lives facilitates locally arranged cardiac screening clinics for those aged 14-35 at various centres in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

At a cost of €45 per person, each consultation involves the completion of a screening questionnaire and an electrocardiogram (ECG). All ECG’s will be assessed and interpreted by a Consultant Cardiologist. Further testing by way of Echocardiogram (ECHO) is available, if required.

Each person being screened will be provided with an Information Booklet, which informs them of the service offered as well as outlining the importance of effective screening. All staff used in the administering and interpreting of the screening programme are medically qualified and experienced practitioners.

Undetected heart conditions affect about 1 in 300 people, with an alarming estimated 40 otherwise healthy young people in Ireland dying each year from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (Sads) or Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome.

Healthy Heart Healthy Lives tests are able to detect the majority of cardiac abnormalities most likely to affect young people.

Congratulations to Abbey Vocational Students Gerry Diver, Darren Doherty, Manus Darby, Emmett Doogan and Pauric Doherty, otherwise known as D5 Racing, who were awarded Best Website and Best use of ICT and CAD at the Regional Finals of the Nationwide F1 in Schools Technology Challenge.

The 5th year students were among 94 teams from 63 schools across 22 counties to accept the challenge to compete in the latest 2012-13 season of F1 in Schools competition. Reeling after their Regional Final success the boys are now racing towards the National Finals to take place in Griffith College on the 30th of April.

The F1 in Schools Technology Challenge is part of an international competition to determine the best-engineered and fastest car in Ireland, with Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone as patron. Open to all secondary schools, the competition challenges students to design and manufacture compressed air-powered racing cars, using the latest of innovative technology and their own bright ideas.

The competition inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership, teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way.

With a combined experience of 10 years the team of five formed as AVS Velocity in the 2011-2012 season. Having won ‘The Best Engineered Car’ at last year’s Regional’s they advanced to the National Final in Dublin.

“Last year we realized the true level of competition required to represent Ireland in the World Finals. We are delighted to regroup this year, overcoming the challenges we faced last year and putting our creative skills together to bring our new model even further in this year’s competition” says D5 Racing Business and Marketing Manager, Gerry Diver.
